Scoring Guide

A scoring guide lists what good looks like as rows, one for each check, with what meets the row and what does not. It lets a result be marked met or not met, and lets the mark be explained.

One row per check
A run is read against the guide one row at a time, a row for each check.

In a Real Template

The meeting notes template has a scoring guide with five rows, one for each of its checks. Here are two of them.

Row 1 meets it when
Every decision quotes the line of your notes it came from, word for word.
Row 1 does not meet it when
A decision has no source line, or the quote is not in your notes.
Row 2 meets it when
Every action has an owner and a due date, or is marked for follow up.
Row 2 does not meet it when
An action has a blank owner or date and is not marked for follow up.

What to notice: Each row can be answered by looking at the result, and the two sides leave no gap between them. That is what lets two people mark the same run the same way.

From the template Turn meeting notes into decisions and actions.

Easy to Mix Up

  • A checkOne question asked while the workflow runs. The scoring guide is the list of all the checks, kept so a run can be marked afterward.
  • A run recordWhat one run found against the guide. The guide stays the same from run to run; each record is new.
  • A rubric for peopleA rubric often rates on levels. These rows are met or not met, each with the evidence that shows it.
