Check whether a draft reads like AI, and fix it

Scan a draft for the common signs of machine writing, mark each one, rewrite only the marked sentences, then scan again until the count of signs reaches zero.

  • Who it is for: Anyone who sends AI-assisted writing under their own name and wants it to read naturally.

The steps, and the check on each

  1. Step 1: Scan for signs of AI writing

Find and list every sentence that shows a common sign of machine writing.

Hands back: A numbered table of every sign found with the exact words, and a count.

Check:Every quote is really in the draft

Counted automatically. If it fails, the step runs again.

  2. Step 2: Rewrite the marked sentences

Rewrite only the marked sentences in plain words, keeping the meaning and every fact.

Hands back: The full revised draft, with only the marked sentences changed.

Check:No number was added or changed

Counted automatically. If it fails, the step runs again.

  3. Step 3: Scan again

Scan the revised draft for the same signs, and count what is left.

Hands back: A second table of any signs left, and a count that should be zero.

Check:The count of signs is zero

Counted automatically. If it fails, the step runs again.

After the last step

  • Check:The final count is zero

Counted automatically. If it fails, the step runs again.

  • Check:The meaning did not change

A second look by the AI. If it fails, the step runs again.

  • Check:It sounds like you

You check this one. If it fails, it is flagged for you.

What you need first

  • The draft(needed)

Paste the draft as it stands. Keep it to a few pages at most.

  • How it should sound(needed)

Describe the voice you want in a few words, and who reads it.

Ways to adapt it

  • To add a sign of your own (a phrase you are tired of seeing), add it to the lists in both scan steps, the same wording in both.
  • To remove a sign you do not mind, delete it from both lists and renumber them.
  • If the second scan will not reach zero after two tries, fix the last few sentences yourself. A person editing the last bit is a good result.
  • For very long drafts, run the whole template on one section at a time.
